Let’s say you waive those rights – most people do – and the officer questions you for several hours. In 2009, Zambian economist and former World Bank consultant Dambisa Moyo defined such assistance as “dead aid.” Following the rise to power of a new generation of African leaders and the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States, Africa’s sovereign economic development has once again become a relevant issue. Moreover, the center-periphery model of development – with the West as the center – may be revised. This model has been in place since the 1980s, when Western financial institutions implemented structural adaptation programs in Africa that forced the state to withdraw from the social sphere and entailed the liberalization of industries. Calls from right-wing senators for troops to intervene in campus demonstrations. Hundreds of student and faculty arrests , with nonviolent dissenters thrown to the ground, tear-gassed and tased . We’ve been here before. In my book “ Resistance from the Right: Conservatives and the Campus Wars in Modern America ,” I detail how, throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, conservative activists led a counterattack against campus antiwar and civil rights demonstrators by demanding action from college presidents and police. They made a number of familiar claims about student protesters: They were at once coddled elitists, out-of-state agitators and violent communists who sowed discord to destroy America. WOFFORD ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF POLITICAL SCIENCE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON Following the nearly three-hour oral argument about presidential immunity in the Supreme Court on April 25, 2024, many commentators were aghast . The general theme, among legal and political experts alike, was a hand-over-the-mouth, how-dare-they assessment of the mostly conservative justices’ questioning of the attorneys who appeared before them in the case known as Trump v. United States . Rather than a laser-focused, deep dive into the details of Trump’s attempt to subvert the 2020 election, virtually all of the nine justices instead raised larger questions, peppered with hypotheticals – hello again, Seal Team Six ! – about the reach of executive power , the intent of the nation’s founders and the best way to promote a stable democracy. Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s “I’m not focused on the here and now of this case” and Justice Neil Gorsuch’s “We are writing a rule for the ages” drew particular fire.

Nudism outside of Carnival parades is widely frowned upon in Brazil. Contrary to what many think, the Igbo Diaspora is not really a homogenous, coherent group. Like other ethnic nationalities in the USA, the Igbo Diaspora consists of peoples from all walks of life separated by everything and only united by the fact that they are all Igbo.
