ECOWAS Partners Media To Combat Disinformation About West Africa

Abdou Kolley (Facebook) BY MICHAEL OLUGBODE ABUJA, NIGERIA (THIS DAY) -- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in order to enhance its image and showcase its contributions to the socioeconomic development of West Africa has launched a collaboration with media across the region. Speaking at the inaugural session which brought government-owned media outfits across the region together in Abuja on Thursday, the Chief of Staff in the Office of the President of ECOWAS Commission, Hon. Abdou Kolley, said the initiative was created in order to promote an accurate reporting of ECOWAS activities and tackling the growing issue of disinformation. Not much was talked about it. Not much was known about it. Not even the mainstream media mentioned it. In fact, it was not a big deal, because, as usual, knowing what should be expected from such a gathering of the wives of inept and corrupt African presidents, the errand boys, the opportunistic organizers had to run the show their own way which is typical of deceit and fraud. We've seen this kind of stuff happen many times as it ends up being a picnic and a loophole for money laundering. I was socializing with some friends when the event and its issues popped up. Xi Offers African Leaders More Aid As China Challenges US-Led Global Order

BY KEN MORITSUGU AND MONIKA PRONCZUK BEIJING (ASSOCIATED PRESS) — Dozens of African leaders gathered Thursday in Beijing for a summit that signals China’s influence in a continent that it hopes will be a key ally in pushing back against a U.S.-led global order. Chinese President Xi Jinping promised the leaders billions of dollars in loans and private investment over the next three years, and proposed that relations with all African countries that have diplomatic ties with China be elevated to the “strategic” level. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with each other to firmly defend our legitimate rights and interests,” he said at the opening ceremony of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. China has become a major player in Africa since the forum was founded in 2000. Its companies have invested heavily in mining for the resources Chinese industry needs, and its development banks have made loans to build railways, roads and other infrastructure under Xi’s Belt and Road program . Even in many developed countries such as the U.S., poverty rates exceed 12% . In an age of breathtaking technological progress and dynamic social change, poverty remains stubbornly persistent. As a professor of entrepreneurship , I’m interested in a critical question: Can people in poverty create their own path to prosperity? In other words, is venture creation a viable poverty alleviation tool? My work has shown that it can be – with the right kind of support. However, that support is often lacking. A big part of the problem is ignorance: Most people simply don’t know much about poverty and entrepreneurship.
